Ah, now I understand. Don't waste your time with the letter. It will not accomplish anything.
Instead, you need to pick a few names and then check them against business filings in your county and state. If you go to the secretary of state page for your state, you should be able to do a business name search to see if anyone is using them. The search should be free.
If no conflicts come up, you should then go to the city or county offices for your area and search the d.b.a (doing business as) filings. If one of the names is available, you can file your own dba application to reserve the name. If you really want to be thorough, you should also conduct a search on the Patent and Trademark Office site [uspto.gov] to make sure nobody has trademarked the name.
Once you reserve the name, you should be good to go.
