Default Setting up sole trader whilst studying

If someone could provide some advice I would appreciate it very much....

I have been working for a web development company for the last few years, but have now decided to take a couple of years off in order to go back to study (a completey unrelated subject). However, since leaving the company I have been approached by a number of people asking me to do work for them. In order to keep my options open, as well as to provide myself with the extra cash, I am now toying with the idea of setting up as sole-trader so I can work legitimately whenever I get it. Because the work won't be very regular I don't really want to go to any expense in order to do this, but I would like some kind of peace of mind that I'm doing things properly.

Does anyone have any ideas about the best route to take, the costs involved etc etc.

Thanks in advance
George
