I do some freelance work and have never used a webpage which charges either a membership fee or a percentage of a job. It's possible to find jobs without paying someone.
Freelancing is just a part of Online Business. Online business is a huge term ranging from diffrent fields. Only working as freelance is not online business. There are lot of things like selling on ebay , running a ezine, forum, and many such things which can come in online business
Freelancing is not something that is necessarily done through online advertisements on websites.
It is not a new concept and known by a variety of other names such as contracting or even being self employed. When looking for "freelance" work, I don't think that you should restrict yourselves to online websites, but look at more traditional sources of work such as recruitment agencies, adverts in newspapers and networking through contacts.
Freelancer is a person who works for a contract and the money is fixed for the particular work. The freelancers are finding their works through various online freelancers websites like rentacoder.com, scriptlance.com, getafreelancer.com and elance.com. Most of the freelance jobs done through these freelance websites.
