Default Shopping cart for unique items?

I am going to try to help my brother get his gem stone business off the ground - he is doing some selling but not as much as both of us would like.

The problem with gem stones is that they are all unique - so the "standard" shopping cart method doesn't quite work for us.

Does anyone know of a shopping cart software system that allows for unique items? I have yet to find something "off the shelf" that fits.

I believe there are programs out there that allow you to treat cataloged items/inventory as unique, one-of-a-kind. I saw and test drove one just a couple months ago that I think worked that way. Let me see if I can find it ...

What did you sort of have in mind - is it no categories? Or what might be the uniqueness of it?

I'll say that we developed our own cart to somewhat fit everyone's needs but since that can be done we also fixed it so we can go in and tailor things as needed

That is one idea The Old Sarge, I did not think about. If so - that could possibly easily be incorporated with a stock option that the majority of carts support.

I was thinking more like build a bracelet - where they actually built a bracelet in flash.

That would necessitate a database wouldn't it? Just curious ... since the antiquated "beast" I use is not set up for it.

Funny - I never thought about using the "Stock" option.

You and sarge are right - there would be categories (e.g., "Sapphires") but the quantity of each sapphire would be limited to one item - since each is unique it would sell out as soon as the first one was purchased.

I've pondered the idea of what happens if person "A" selects a stone, starts to fill out the order, and doesn't complete it very fast. Meanwhile, person "B" selects the same stone, is fast with payment, and beats person "A".

That is probably a future problem. To start out with the volume will likely be low.

This would be where the code would actually have to be written not to show it if it is in a cart.

you're saying that it can be done in the coding? (No wonder I never thought of that one ... it's too simple!) Any idea how to go about that? Anybody? Where could I begin to look if I want to learn this little 'trick'?

the problem here is when two customers add same product at the same time
So you need to use transaction and 99% of open source dont support it
