Unix is still used in servers though MS would like to end that, but Linux was originally based on Unix. As I recall though, Unix is still very much syntax driven, so it's not for the average user. I'm sure Unix users would love to tout its stability over MS, which is what motivates them to learn how to use it.

Unix is extremely wide spread. You probably don't hear about it because there are many different versions and that is how they are usually referred to - for example Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, FreeBSD and Red Hat are all varieties of Unix.

Most high end business applications run in a Unix environment - or, if it's financial, it may run on a mainframe.

Strange that thousands of programmers at MS produce an unreliable, heavily flawed operating system, while one man Linus Torvalds produced a reliable, solid operating system called Linux.

I'm aware of all the helpers that Linux now has around the world.

Can you imagine if an operating system like Windows (any version) was used on a 737 aircraft to control all the computers?

Sure, I can imagine that. I just can't imagine flying anywhere once it was implemented

Intercom message on 737 flight high over the Andes:

Pilot to passengers, the engines are shut down coz we got the 'BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH' again. Strong alcoholic drinks and tranquilizers will be served as soon as the re-boot is completed.

Hopefully we will land at LA airport in about 1 day to 15 days depending on if computers are up and running at the waypoints.

Could that passenger who has Linux on his notebook computer come up to the pilots cabin and lend it to us for a while?
