Default Business license

Hello,
I live in unincorporated Bay County in Florida. I have talked to many poeple in the license department in a couple of my closest towns about a business liscense. I have been told by more than half, that as long as the business address is outside of any city limits, I don't have to have a license. As strange as it sounded, that is what I was told when I went to get said license in Panama City.

I have recieved a letter from the town of Lynn Haven today saying my business is operating in violation and Section 62-31.

Since it is a Saturday, I can't call and see what's up. So I was wondering if there was anybody "in the know" that would be able to tell me if Panama City was smoking the weed, or is Lynn Haven confused... Remember, I don't live in either city, and the business isn't located within city limits.

I have searched the web also, with no luck.

Thanks

I'm certainly no expert in the law in this kind of thing, but I can't imagine you could be held responsible for this debt. It's the companies debt, not yours and as long as you weren't an owner of the company I can't see how the debt is yours.

I may be wrong about this, but I don't think a collection agency actually has any legal authority. I think their job is to put as much pressure as they can on you to pay in an effort to make you nervous about what can happen, but I don't think they can actually force you to pay without going to court. And I'm not sure how much they'd be willing to go to court for $350.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong about this. What I'm saying is my opionion based on what seems like common sense, but I know the law doesn't always work from common sense.

Look up with Section 62-31 is. I doubt they were smoking weed; probably misunderstood your question. Unless it was in writing by the city, you can't have a "he said, she said" argument.

In most localities a business license is just another way to pick up a few tax dollars. It seems like someone wants your money. Paying the $ 25 to $ 100 they probably want will handle everything.

And it doesn't matter where you live, you always live within some level of local governments taxing authority. Fill out the form, write a check, get on with life. By any name, it's a tax.
