Default Do we need a Seller's Permit???

Friends and I are starting an LLC company now, and we are wondering whether we need a Seller's Permit.
We offer Graphic Design/ Editing Services

Here's how our process of business works:

-We work on footages given by a client (MAIN PART OF BUSINESS WE DO)
-We purchase a blank tape (DVD's and other forms of data file tapes), and;
-give the client a finished footage in the tape.

Please help!

Check with the state you are in, for example, in California: Who must obtain a seller's permit?, the two requirements are:
Are engaged in business in California and
Intend to sell or lease tangible personal property that would ordinarily be subject to sales tax if sold at retail.
And I think this is about the same for each state.

I would suggest going to your local Small Business Administration Center. Each state has it's own guidelines regarding what is needed in order to do business. They should have all the information that you need to figure out what you need in order to get the ball rolling.

I would also look into getting into federal sales as well if you have a unique product. The best place to look into federal inquiries is http://www.fedbizopps.gov/.
Being in Hawaii, I have had a lot of experience working with the federal government and it can be a very profitable venture.

Hope that helps....

A sellers permit, or business license, or whatever it may be called in your locality is basically another way to collect a tax. Yes, if you are business, you need one. If you provide a service or products you need one. If you can fog a mirror you will need one. They want your money. If they catch you doing business without one it will only cost you more.

Best place to check is where you would pay any kind of tax bill in your area. If they are not the right place, they can probably tell yo who to contact. Or, in some cases that you need nothing. But don't accept that you'll need nothing until you have been told that by 2 or 3 different offices. There are still places where the left hand has absolutely no idea what the right is doing.
