Default Marketing on a Budget

We always hear of ways to market our businesses but they often cost $1000s. If you had only $100 to spend on ways to increase your business how would you spend it?
I'm thinking of a direct mailing to local businesses. In the letter I would outline my services and how they can benefit from them. I would offer free installation of vehicle or window lettering (2 of my services). It would also have a time limit to induce a quick response.
What would you do?

off topic, but i think your logo is a bit too detailed to be scaled down to a business card and still be recognizable.

what do your customers like? what do they have in common? leave your cards at these destinations. however, i'm unsure how you are going to just leave a stack of business cards somewhere and effectively advertise in doing so.

I would say Physiclly go there and talk to them. It doesn't cost much and at least you know they heard you. Just think, when you get mail that you don't need or want your throw it out. Same thing is going to happen.

If you start outlining your company you need to do it in a non-spam manor, because that will turn them off.

Personally I would rather either physically deliver the letter or physically talk to them. Either way it sets you out from the rest of the people trying to do the same thing.

Direct mail is one of the best ways to contact someone. You won’t get slammed for spamming them and can be a very effective approach. If you are creative, the letter will not get tossed and the message might get read. A direct mail campaign is very efficient if your group of recipients has a chance to see up to 12 items with your message attached.

There is one real estate investor in Florida that has me on his list and has sent me some of the most creative marketing pieces. Each one is saved and will be used as an example of a great mailing campaign. Rest assured this guy gets results!

I just thinking about it from my perpective. Unless something is very catchy but yet not spammy on the front and has a short but sweet letter I won't read it unless it is like an amazing real estate deal on something I want.

With a budget I would heartily suggest a good pair of walking shoes. Get some business cards and make up a one-sheet sample of the work you do the most of, or the work you want to do the most of, and hit the streets. That's right, I recommend the good ol' tried and true technique of turning over rocks. I know that's hard to think of in this electronic world, however, you'll find that in your business it's the relationship and knowing who to call. I would also recommend you get a cheap leave behind with your company name and phone number.

Next, I would recommend a good shrink. Why? Anyone in Buffalo NY using a picture on their site that it looks like it came from the southern part of my state, Utah -- needs help. (smile).
