skimming - debit card fraud
There is a new threat to debit card users called "skimming." Skimming occurs when thieves set up a device that captures the magnetic stripe and keypad information from ATM machines and gas pumps. Because some of the risks associated with debit card fraud are the same as credit cards, you should protect your account numbers in your wallet, online or over the phone.
Take the steps to protect yourself from skimming and other forms of fraud.
Make sure you are vigilant when protecting your wallet, cash, as well as credit and debit cards. If you do notice something suspicious, report it to The Bancorp Bank immediately, whether it's a possible skimming device or an unauthorized charge on your statement.
Protect yourself against debit card fraud this holiday season and feel secure when doing your shopping. With the popularity and ease of using debit cards at millions of locations, it is important to protect your debit card, just as you would with cash, credit cards or checks.

Thanks for this advice, jayadev - it's good to be vigilant.
This sort of crime does appear to be on the increase.

I doubt it was "Skimming", but this just happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I looked at my account, and someone had cleaned me out. My wife and I both still had our cards, so they got the number from somewhere, and started charging like crazy......

I heared many guys are cracking credit card numbers from internet and charging their mobiles with those numbers. I think there must be some other security arrangements insteaedof visible number on card.

Craztel, how hard was it for you to get it resolved through your bank? Is the burden of proof on you to prove it was fraudulent use, or do they just take your word?

I check on all my credit card accounts at least once a week and my debit account daily. Thankfully, no incidents yet...it's interesting to me that most people are hesitant to use their cards online but don't give a second thought to handing it to a waiter or using it at a store...just as easy for it to be stolen there as well. Thanks jayadev for the info!

Its not too hard to proof them that our card is hacked or used or skimmed. every card comes with buyer protection agreement which means if you say that this is not your transaction then both banks (supplier and customer) will settle the account and your account will not affect.

I check all my card accounts etc quite regularly also; just to make nothing hasn't been bought which shouldn't have been.
The idea of me being a victim of fraud terrifies me, what has the world come to now a day!

It was actually easy to get the problem solved, and my bank was GREAT about taking care of things. All I had to do was call them, and let them know that someone was using my information, and they jumped into action. My cards were cancelled within seconds, and new ones were ordered. They filled out the paperwork, and gave me credits for all of the bad charges........
