Default How to market a music site?

Hi!

I'm the proud owner of ...look at my sig , for I don't want to spam

My website is dedicated to promoting yet unknown artists. It will enable them to create their own user pages with their own galleries and music.

my slogan: "RisingVibe - for Rising Artists"

The site is pretty far in development and is scheduled to open early Feb. Before it opens however I really wanted to create a hype about.
any Ideas of how to do that?

the one I had was:
Advertising on other websites.
Putting up an exciting face on the site explaining what it is all about and a counter, counting the days til the site will open.

Any other Ideas?

Well, you should definitely put something on the front page. Maybe a demo or demo video clip of one of the bands, or at least a blurb explaining what the site will be about.

I dont see much point in advertising until the site is complete and open.

If you have some bands that are going to be listed on there then maybe you could offer some sort of free MP3 thing. Say each band could pick a track they would like people to hear and for 1 week give free downloads of these tracks. And Really promote the fact that people can get these free MP3's as of a certain date.

If you can get this fact in front of people enough they will all be there wanting to get there free MP3's and possibly stay around and have a better loook.

I would suggest:
-Press releases
-Posting on music forums/message boards
-Maybe an ad in music ezines/paper

Just my thoughts...

I would suggest:

Band blogs
Band web space
Forums
Photo galleries (for concerts)

So that bands could promote themselves and visitors could interact with them. Make people want to come back.

1. Press Releases would be good (regional business, and music related media)

2. I helped launch a big .com once and we did the counting down the days thing and it didn't seem to matter.

3. What about having a kick off party of some kind. Get a club or something and sponsor a bank contest or something like that get some media and interest.

4. Ads in music magazines would be something you should do but try to get press releases in them first

I like your Ideas! and will use a number of them including

-Posting on music forums/message boards
-an ad in music ezines/paper
-and of course having a blurb on the page.

As for organizing an event that would promote the site, unfortunately the budget is not big enough to do so, but i really like that idea!

Surely you have thought about bandwidth requirements.. Doing a music site requires insane amounts of bandwidth. I know just on my music site (i'm a bit of a composer on the side @ www.chrishornemusic.com) the amount of traffic I get is insane.
