We are in desperate need of a logo. I had the idea of having a logo design contest on my website. The winner would receive merchandise in exchange for the logo design. I would like opinions on whether this is a good or bad idea.

Yes, I think logo contests are a good idea.

If there is good incentive, then you can get quite a few entries, and a lot of logos to then choose from.

No really good logo designer is going to give you a logo for free. However, if you would like to get an inexpensive logo try here:

You offer a prize in cash, discribe the project, then run a logo design project. You have to pay the prize up front and only get the finished logo at the end.
