Default Have you been a victim of fraud?

I'm curious to know how many people here have been a victim of any form of fraud or identity theft.

I had someone sign me up for RAC insurance a few years back, even though I don't have a driving license, let alone a car. They were kind enough to refund me when I contacted them about it. It was a 'friend' that did it, so I'm not sure if that counts as identity theft. Just a purely thought out practical joke.

A friend of mine was a victim of more traditional fraud. Some person in one of the traditionally considered 'dodgy' countries hacked an insecure site and got his credit card details, and took a couple of thousand pounds from the card. The credit card company refunded this, but it was very stressful for him.

Both the things I mentioned were a couple of years back. Since then nothing has happened to anyone I know - even people who are very relaxed with their card details - and an elderly relative who insists on keeping their pin number in their diary, and getting it out to consult every time they need their pin. (yes, several people have tried to educate them, but they just don't care).

So, how much is this kind of fraud going on these days? Have you experienced it?

No I haven't experienced this kind of crime but would advise people to keep as few credit cards as possible as being a mojor way of stopping them being a victim. These days most people are quite happy to have around 6 different credit cards which makes it awfully hard to sort out if you have them stolen.
