Default where do I find new business mailing lists?

Anyone know where I can find a list of newly licensed businesses or newly formed corporations? I know that shortly after our company incorporated, I started to receive all sorts of mail. I contacted a couple of these companies to see if they could point me to who provided them with the list, but to no avail . We run a computer consulting company targeted at small businesses and startups, and we are trying to get a letter and a informational packet to local companies when they form. Anyone had a positive experience with a company, or is there perhaps a state government list that can be obtained?

I most cities of any size there are one or more "clipping services" that go through newspapers, court filings, real estate transfers, license filings, etc. on a daily basis and sell the information to those interested. My local Yellow Pages lists one such Clipping Bureau. Yours might show more.

Have you tried your local chamber of commerce? Many sell their lists.

Thanks for the advice!
I tried looking for Clipping services in the local yellow pages, nothing there tho. I'm wondering if there is some company that provides this data on a national scale. I recieved direct mail from companies as far away as California (I'm in VA). So someone is coming up with these lists on a national scale . I'm gonna give the Chamber of Commerce a try as well.

Have you tried contacting your states sales license dept? You can get the licensing infomation for a very small fee (usually less than the amount a list renter would charge and then it is yours). Yon can get this info through the use of the freedom of informatino act.

Richard is right. Your state's sales licensing department is a good place to start. You also might want to check with your county as well as the state to see what businesses have incorporated.

The most comprehensive list for U.S. based businesses is SRDS.
"Standard Rate and Data Service" ---> http://www.srds.com

Canadian business can be found at http://www.infocanada.ca

Thanks for all the great info! I actually managed to find a list on my local paper's web site, they list all the new businesses and addresses every Monday. The best part about it is the listing is easly parsable for entering it into a database, which is awesome! I would recommend checking the local paper sites for simple integration into your mailing databases.

You can also search Secretary of State websites. Most states have a searchable database on-line. (and no charge).
