You can either go through a brokerage (or an on-line discount trader) or buy DRIPs direct from the companies depending upon what you want.

If you want hand-holding, advice and/or full service, go with a brokerage.

If you want to do it all yourself, use a discount broker Ameritrade / Scwab / etc (there are hundreds of them) or invest directly with DRIPs.

You can take a peek at this site to get some more information about the Dow and NASDAQ. www.nasdaq.com/references/glossary.stm

Minimum investments are usually driven by the seller (whether through brokerage or individually). If you have a large sum of money to invest, then I highly advise a broker to help you set up your risk profile. You can still invest aggresively without putting everything at risk. Asset allocation is important.
